[Visit DUT] DUT Sino-Japanese Student Exchange Program (SJ-SEP)

As one of the serial activities of "China-Japan Youth Exchange Promotion Year" and an important part of DUT’s 70th Anniversary Celebration, DUT Sino-Japanese Student Exchange Program (SJ-SEP) attracted nearly 400 teachers and students from a total of 27 universities and related institutions in Japan. The visiting teachers and students were divided into 7 groups to experience Chinese classes and Chinese culture in the School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Faculty of Infrastructure Engineering, School of Architecture and Art, School of Foreign Languages, Dalian University of Technology-Ritsumeikan University International Information and Software School.

The School of Mechanical Engineering organized 36 Japanese students together with 18 Chinese volunteer students to the Engineering Training Center, where they practiced laser engraving and 3D printing there. Through software three-dimensional modeling, laser engraving and 3D printing production, parts assembly and other processes, they completed their works and displayed them. The students also visited the State Key Laboratory of Modern Manufacturing and went to KeDe Numerical Control Co., Ltd. in the Development Zone to visit the processing and assembly workshop of the CNC controlled five-axis machining center.


The 7th China-Japan "Opton Cup" Metallographic Skills Competition for College students of the School of Materials Science and Engineering was held during this period. Under the patient guidance of teachers, 31 exchange students from Osaka University, Kyushu University and other universities in Japan and 200 undergraduates from DUT practiced and prepared for the competition and learned from each other. Apart from the competition, the Chinese and Japanese students studied in the class of metal materials engineering (intensified Japanese) to deepen mutual understanding.

The Faculty of Infrastructure Engineering organized a joint steel bridge competition in combination with professional characteristics. Mixed groups of Chinese and Japanese students competed against each other. During the process, students from both sides discussed in depth the bridge design and assembly, and put forward some feasible methods to improve the carrying capacity and assembly efficiency. In addition, they also visited laboratories and took city tours.

Teachers and students majored in design from the School of Architecture and Art carried out exchanges with those of Hosei University, Japan, and had a seminar on the research results of the "Environmental Regeneration Design of Old Communities in Dalian Shahekou District", which laid a solid foundation for future cooperation and exchanges in the field of architecture. Students majored in Sculpture of the School of Architecture and Fine Art conducted in-depth exchanges with teachers and students of Yamaguchi University, Japan, in direct sculpture material ceramic art, digital technology sculpture, public art creation, and the survey of sculpture creation practice bases. Under the theme of "Harmony", Chinese and Japanese students jointly conceived, discussed, deliberated, and designed schemes, using artistic modeling language such as abstract generalization and image transformation to jointly create sculptures that embody the characteristics of Chinese and Japanese cultures. The birth of those precious works reflected the fruits of friendship born from the flower of art.

Appreciate the beauty of culture and enhance the friendship between classmates


The School of Foreign Languages organized 272 students from China and Japan to listen to a special lecture "From 'Caojue Song' to 'Paleography'", which opened a window for Japanese exchange students who love traditional Chinese culture to understand Chinese calligraphy and poetry. On May 2, they participated in a special lecture given by Takachi Ishida of the Japanese Department on "Cross-Cultural Understanding in the Context of Globalization", and were divided into 10 classes using English, Japanese, and Chinese languages to have a discussion on the connotation of cross-cultural understanding. The on-site discussion atmosphere was relaxing and warm, which narrowed the gap between Chinese and Japanese students. At the end of the schedule, the students from both sides visited the city together to feel the romance of Dalian.

The School of International Information and Software received 93 Japanese teachers and students from 11 Japanese universities, including Osaka University and Ritsumeikan University. During the nearly week-long trip, the visiting teachers, students and volunteers visited Dalian high-tech enterprises, Xinghai Square and Donggang CBD. They learned about Dalian’s unique culture, listened to special lectures on the research fields of the DUT’s teachers, participated in lively and interesting Chinese language courses, and attended an unforgettable bonfire party at the Golden Pebble Beach.

A special group of the seven was composed of five DUT students and six friends they invited as classmates during their studies in Japan. Together with the teachers and students from the School of Foreign Languages, they took lessons in Tai Chi fan, Tai Chi boxing, and Chinese martial arts. In the charm of Chinese traditional culture, they deepened this friendship across the sea.

In addition, DUT held club culture experience activities at Ball Sports Training Hall in the Liu Changchun Gym where students from clubs with unique DUT characteristics carried out demonstrations. At the same time, there were exhibition areas for well-known Japanese universities such as the University of Tokyo and Osaka University. Many students who intend to study in Japan came for consultation. The international students of the Postgraduate Tai Chi Association showed what they learned in China. The moment the Chinese Kung Fu fan was unfolded in the hands of them, the audience couldn't help but applaud.

On May 5, the one-week "China-Japanese Student Exchange Activity" came to a successful conclusion, leaving a strong mark for celebrating the 70th birthday of DUT. Both Chinese and Japanese students expressed that they had benefited a lot from the exchange of professional knowledge and the sharing of cultural characteristics of the two countries. It is hoped that the Chinese and Japanese students can maintain this beautiful memory, be pioneering and innovative in the future study and set sail to a brighter tomorrow, and become messengers of Sino-Japanese friendship. It's also hoped that DUT and Japanese universities would take this opportunity to continuously deepen cooperation and exchanges and promote the flourishing development of education.
